Canton Zug or Canton Schwyz? Low tax, different rent

Both cantons are known as tax-friendly, and both sit within reasonable commuting range of Zürich. Even so, "Zug or Schwyz" cannot be answered with one figure: municipalities inside a canton can differ from each other more than the two cantonal averages do. This guide runs the numbers for eight actual municipalities: four in canton Zug (Zug, Baar, Cham, Walchwil) and four in canton Schwyz (Freienbach, Küssnacht, Arth, Lachen), for a single person and for a married couple with two children, both at CHF 130'000 gross income.

The tax figures, municipality by municipality

Every figure below comes from Zügle's tax data for tax year 2026 and is an exact value for the stated profile.

MunicipalityCantonSingleMarried, 2 children
ZugZGCHF 9'384CHF 1'389
BaarZGCHF 9'181CHF 1'372
ChamZGCHF 9'475CHF 1'397
WalchwilZGCHF 9'339CHF 1'385
FreienbachSZCHF 9'216CHF 3'477
KüssnachtSZCHF 11'888CHF 4'677
ArthSZCHF 11'888CHF 4'677
LachenSZCHF 11'229CHF 4'381

For the single person, the four Zug municipalities sit close together (CHF 9'181–9'475), and Freienbach lands right in the middle of that range — CHF 9'216 − CHF 9'181 (Baar) = CHF 35 per year, essentially nothing. Küssnacht, Arth and Lachen sit noticeably higher: CHF 11'888 − CHF 9'384 (Zug) = CHF 2'504 per year more in Küssnacht or Arth than in the town of Zug.

For the married couple with two children, the gap widens sharply. Every Zug municipality here stays under CHF 1'400 per year, while even the cheapest Schwyz example, Freienbach, sits at CHF 3'477: CHF 3'477 − CHF 1'389 (Zug) = CHF 2'088 per year more tax in Freienbach than in the town of Zug, for the same income. Between Freienbach and Küssnacht/Arth there is a further CHF 4'677 − CHF 3'477 = CHF 1'200 per year gap — within the same canton.

That shows two things at once: canton Zug is cheaper for a family with children, in every one of the four municipalities checked here, than every one of the four Schwyz municipalities checked — but "canton Schwyz" is not one uniform figure itself. Freienbach and Lachen differ by CHF 4'381 − CHF 3'477 = CHF 904 per year (married), despite sitting in the same canton.

Rent — canton-level context only

None of the eight municipalities has its own figure in the rent statistics Zügle draws on. What is available is only the two canton averages: Zug CHF 2'024/month, Schwyz CHF 1'719/month (both 2024, the same survey). Because both figures share the same basis — canton average, same year — they may, as an exception, be set against each other: CHF 2'024 − CHF 1'719 = CHF 305 per month, canton Zug is on average more expensive to rent in.

Important: this says nothing about Zug town, Baar, Cham, Walchwil, Freienbach, Küssnacht, Arth or Lachen specifically — a canton average blurs huge differences between, say, a lakeside municipality and a rural village in the same canton. For a real apartment, always enter the actual rent in Zügle; never treat a canton average as a stand-in for it.

The commute

Three example routes, computed by two different methods:

FromToMethodMonthly pass (2nd class)
BaarZürich HBnational tariff distanceCHF 250
Pfäffikon SZZürich HBregional fare-zone tariff (ZVV)CHF 249
ZugLucernenational tariff distanceCHF 250

Baar–Zürich and Pfäffikon SZ–Zürich cost nearly the same, CHF 250 and CHF 249, even though the two methods calculate differently (national tariff kilometres versus a regional fare-zone tariff) — that is coincidence, not proof the two routes are equally long or comfortable. Zug–Lucerne comes out at the same CHF 250. Both cantons are therefore also commutable toward central Switzerland, not only toward Zürich. All three figures are Zügle's own estimate, not a quoted SBB price; check the actual fare in the SBB timetable or shop before deciding. We have no figure for journey time, so nothing is said about it here.

Pfäffikon is not always the same Pfäffikon

Anyone typing "Pfäffikon" should know there are two of them. Pfäffikon SZ is a locality within the municipality of Freienbach (canton Schwyz), while Pfäffikon ZH is its own municipality in canton Zürich — two entirely different tax bills and two different cantons behind the same place name. Searching "Pfäffikon" without a canton tag can land in the wrong municipality; Zügle asks which one is meant rather than guessing. The same applies to postcodes that cover more than one municipality: the ZIP alone is not enough to determine the correct tax municipality.

These figures apply to CHF 130'000 gross income and eight chosen municipalities. With your own income, your own rent and your own preferred municipality — in canton Zug, Schwyz, or elsewhere — the result can look different:
